Get Screened for Colorectal Cancer: Early Detection Saves Lives

Colorectal cancer awareness campaign image.

Colorectal cancer is now the #1 cause of cancer-related death among adults under 50, according to the American Cancer Society. While these numbers are concerning, there’s hope: early detection makes colorectal cancer highly treatable and often preventable.

Many people with early-stage colorectal cancer have no symptoms, which is why regular screening is essential. Experts recommend that adults start routine colorectal cancer screening at age 45, or earlier if they have higher risk factors.

Why Colorectal Cancer Screening Matters

Screening is the most effective way to detect colorectal cancer before it becomes life-threatening. Early detection can save lives, prevent complications, and improve treatment outcomes.

Colorectal Cancer Screening Options

At Via Care, we offer several safe and effective screening methods:

  • Examines the entire colon and removes precancerous polyps
  • Requires a referral to a gastroenterologist
  • Appointment wait time: approximately 4–5 months
  • If results are normal, repeat every 10 years; if abnormal, follow-up may be recommended in 1, 3, or 5 years
  • DNA-based stool test that detects abnormal DNA and blood
  • Recommended for patients with:
    • No personal or family history of colorectal cancer
    • No tobacco use
    • No previous abnormal colonoscopy
  • If negative, repeat every 3 years
  • Insurance coverage may vary
  • At-home test that detects hidden blood in stool
  • Recommended once per year
  • Ideal for patients whose insurance does not cover Cologuard

Know Your Risk Factors

Certain lifestyle and medical factors can increase your risk of colorectal cancer:

  • Lifestyle: Obesity, low physical activity, high-fat/low-fiber diet
  • Personal or family history: Colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer
  • Genetic conditions: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), Lynch syndrome

If any of these factors apply, or if you are age 45 or older, talk with your provider about getting screened. Screening could save your life.
