October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to come together as a community to support, honor and uplift those affected by breast cancer. At Via Care Community Health Center, we believe in the power of early detection, self-breast exams, and regular screenings to save lives.
If you’re due for a mammogram in the Los Angeles area or would like to schedule a breast health screening, our caring providers are here to support you.
Why It Matters
- 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime
- In 2025, there will be an estimated 316, 950 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women.
- There are 4.3 million women living in the US with a history of breast cancer
- Early detection increases treatment options and survival rates
At Via Care, we’re committed to helping you stay proactive about your health through accessible breast cancer screenings and compassionate care.
How to Do a Self-Breast Exam at Home
Performing regular self-exams can help you become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel, making it easier to notice any changes.
Here’s how to do it:
- In the Shower
Move your 3 middle fingers around each breast and armpit area in a circular motion, pressing down with light, medium, and firm pressure. Check for lumps, thickened areas, or any other changes.
- In Front of a Mirror
Stand with your arms to your side, and look for changes in size, shape, or color. Check for visible swelling or dimpling. Next, place your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Check for any dimpling, puckering or other changes.
- Lying Down
Place a pillow under your right shoulder and put your right arm behind your head. Use your left hand and move your 3 middle fingers around your right breast and armpit area. Use light, medium, and firm pressure to check for any lumps, thickened areas, or any other changes. Do the same for your left breast.
If you notice any new lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or changes in appearance, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider right away.
While this is a useful tool for early detection, it should not take the place of regular mammograms and clinical breast exams.
