Via Care's Dr. Demetrio Cardenas Shares Expert Guidance on Cyclospora Outbreak on Univision

Via Care is proud to share that our Chief Medical Officer and Family Medicine Provider, Dr. Demetrio Cardenas, was featured on Univision to discuss the recent Cyclospora outbreak affecting communities across the United States and provide guidance on prevention, symptoms, and treatment.

According to reports, Cyclospora cases have been identified in 31 states, prompting health officials to investigate the source of the outbreak. Authorities believe contaminated fruits and vegetables, particularly leafy greens, may be contributing factors, though investigations remain ongoing.

During the interview, Dr. Cardenas explained that Cyclospora is a parasite that can be found in contaminated water and produce. Once ingested, it can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, leading to symptoms such as severe diarrhea, gas, abdominal discomfort, bloating, and fatigue.

To help reduce the risk of infection, Dr. Cardenas shared several practical recommendations for consumers:

  • Thoroughly wash fresh fruits and vegetables before consumption.
  • Consider cooking vegetables rather than eating them raw whenever possible.
  • Remove outer layers of leafy greens such as lettuce before washing.
  • Use running water to clean produce carefully.
  • Consider frozen or canned fruits and vegetables as safe alternatives that still provide important nutrients.

While most healthy individuals recover with appropriate treatment, anyone experiencing persistent diarrhea, dehydration, severe abdominal symptoms, or prolonged illness should seek medical attention promptly.

At Via Care, we remain committed to providing trusted health education and empowering our communities with the information they need to stay healthy and informed.
